I love DIY tasks. So, I perform different tasks of my home by myself. A few days ago, I faced a task which needs the use of a welder. As I had faced such tasks before but haven’t bought a welder yet, I decided to buy a welder.
I searched online for a welder that can meet my demands. After some research, I chose to buy Hobart Handler 210 MVP MIG welder. The experience of using this was really great. Now I am writing this Hobart 210 MVP review to let you know about this welder.
Things to Consider while Buying a MIG Welder
When you make a buying choice about MIG welder, there are some things on which you have to keep your eyes. Knowing about those will help you to make a decision quickly about Hobart Handler 210 MVP MIG welder. So, let’s take a look at those first.
Operating voltage is the first thing you need to consider before choosing a MIG welder. It shows which outlet can take the load of it.
If the welder is marked 110V, you can use your normal home outlets to run the machine. But the limitation of this type of welders is the production of low amperage.
You can go for 220V welders for high ampere. But before that, you need to make sure that you have the 220V power sources in your home. If you don’t have one, you need to install one.
Duty cycle is an important factor you need to keep in mind when you’ll buy a MIG welder. ” Duty cycle ” means the continuous performance of a welder at given output without overheating.
Normally the duty cycle is measured depending on a 10-minute cycle. If you see that the duty cycle of a MIG welder is 30% at 180A/240V, it means the welder can run continuously for 3 minutes without overheating. After that, the welder takes the rest of the 10-minute cycle, or 7 minutes, to be prepared for next operation.
Thermal Overload Protection:
Thermal overload is very common in welding operations as welders allow you only a few minutes of continuous work. After that, it takes time to be cool and prepared for next operation. As a result, if you continue works more than the recommended period, overheating happens.
Overheating may fully damage your welder. So, when you are going to buy the best MIG welder for you, make sure that it comes with superior overheating protection. Otherwise, you may have to suffer later.
These are the common things you need to consider. Besides, you can also check the weight, noise, size, material, brand, etc. for getting a better option.

Hobart Handler 210 comes with the scope of using it with multiple voltage inputs. You can plug it into 115V or 230V power source to supply power to the welder. Thus, you’ll be able to use an alternative source where you’ll not get the expected voltage.
For example, if you don’t have a 230V source at your home, you can use the 115V home power source to provide power to the welder.
The main advantage of 115V is it is available in almost every place. But the drawback is it can’t produce high amperage. The 230V source can produce huge amperage, but you need to install one to use. Commonly you won’t get 230V source available everywhere.
Hobart Handler 210 allows you to continue your job anywhere by switching between these two voltage sources. Switching is not a tough task. It comes with both 115V and 230V receptacles. All you need to do is add the correct receptacle with the power cord and plug it into the power source. You can switch between the receptacles without the need of any tool.
It allows 7 voltage settings at 230V and 4 voltage settings at 115V. So, you can perform précised welding task without any problem.
Being powered by 115V and 230V power sources, Hobart Handler 210 is able to produce different level of amperage according to your need. If you connect it to a 115V power source, you’ll get the output from 25 to 140 amperage. On the other hand, if you connect it to 230V power source, it’ll produce 25 to 210 amperage output.
So, you can see that you’ll get output amperage of different levels, starting from 25 amps to 210 amps. This’ll make you able to use this welder for different tasks until your need exceeds 210 amp.
Depending on the power source you have plugged it in, Hobart Handler 210 shows two different duty cycles.
When you’ll connect it with a 115V power source, you’ll get 20% duty cycle at 90 amp output. This is not a bad duty cycle for home use. You can use it continuously for at least 2 minutes. You can perform good tasks within 2 minutes.
On the other hand, if you connect it with a 230V power source, the duty cycle will be 30% at 150 amps. So, if you run it in 150 amp power output, it’ll work 3 minutes continuously. After that, it’ll need a rest of 7 minutes.
A continuous 3 minutes operation at 150 amp output is not bad at all. If you don’t think so, try once. You can perform tough welding tasks if you have a 150 amp welder with 3 minutes runtime.
