Using a Sharpening Stone:

The most common way of sharpening a knife is using a knife sharpening stone. A knife sharpening stone allows sharpening the knife properly. With a sharpening stone and some water, you can easily sharpen your knife. A drawback of this method is it is a slow process. But you can get a precisely sharpen knife according to your need.

Using a Sharpening Rod:

A knife sharpening rod is also common among the professional knife users. It is a long piece of steel with a handle. If you need a quick sharpening, this is a great tool for you. Like using knife sharpening stone, using sharpening rod is also slow, but you can get the sharpening you want. This is not for thinning the knife.

Using a Pull-through Sharpener:

A pull-through sharpener consists of one or a number of small grinding wheels. You need to pull the knife blade through the wheels. This method is easy, but it can’t provide long duration sharpening.

Using an Electric Sharpener:

An electric sharpener is for quick sharpening of knives. In this method, you need to pull your knife blade through a wheel that is running in speed. This is a quick way of sharpening, but you need to be more careful in this method.

Other Methods:

If you don’t have the tools mentioned above, but you need to sharpen the knife, you can use your bench grinder to sharpen the knife. Sharpening knife is not the main task of a bench grinder, but it can do the job well. See some best bench grinders at Power Nailers Reviewed.

You can use an angle grinder for the job too. In this case, you need to hold the knife strongly with the help of a clamp.

So, these are some common methods that we use for sharpening a knife.

What is Better to Me

Among all these methods, I prefer using a sharpening stone to sharpen a knife. This process is a bit slow, but it helps to get expected sharpness of the knife. As it is slow, you can easily monitor the progress and stop when the sharpening starts going wrong.

I suggest getting a portable knife sharpener that’ll give you the scope of taking it with you when going out. In this case, a knife sharpener stone is best in my opinion.

Types of Sharpening Stones

For précised sharpening and other purposes, different types of sharpening stones are designed. You’ll find different types of sharpening stones available in the market, but you can divide those into some common types. Those are discussed below.

knife sharpening stone

Oil Stones:

Oil stones are named such because you need to oil or lubricate the stone first before starting sharpening process. Here,  Oil helps to reduce the friction at the time of sharpening. This helps to sharpen the knife through smooth movement. You’ll find oil stones coming in different materials and grits.

Water Stones:

The equation is simple- oil stones need oil, water stones require water to operate. The stones which you need to soak into the water before starting using are called water stones. In these stones, water works as a lubricant. You’ll find water stones made of both natural and synthetic materials.

Diamond Stones:

Though these are named diamond stones, these are not stones. These are metal plates which contain small diamonds attached to the surface. These are harder than natural or synthetic sharpening stones. The main benefit of using a diamond sharpening stone is it works fast.

Things Required for Sharpening a Knife with Sharpening Stone

You need only a few things to sharpen a knife with a sharpening stone.

You’ll need a knife sharpening stone and oil or water as a lubricant if you want to sharpen a knife with a sharpening stone. there are some type of stones available where you don’t need any lubricants to sharp a stone.

You can also use something to help you to maintain the angle at the time of sharpening. But it is not necessary if you are a regular in doing this.

How to Use a Knife Sharpening Stone

Using a knife sharpening stone to sharpen a knife needs proper care, concentration, and some knowledge. Now, I’m going to describe the process of sharpening a knife using a knife sharpening stone. Please read it carefully. Otherwise, you may miss some critical points. Let’s start.

Know the Angle:

The knife you buy is sharpened at a specific angle. You can sharpen at the same angle or change the angle if you want. Changing the angle needs some more time than keeping the angle.

If you want to keep the angle but don’t know at which angle your knife is sharpened, look at the packaging or search on the internet. You’ll find that easily.

If you want to change the angle, I suggest you keep the angle between 10° – 30°.

Lubricate the Sharpening Stone:

In the previous section, you have already seen that sharpening stones seed oil or water as a lubricant. So, you need to lubricate the stone with the help of proper lubricant. If the stone wants water, use water. Otherwise, use oil to lubricate the stone.

Some stones don’t need lubricants. In that case, you have to skip this step.

Start from the Rough Grit:

Generally, a knife sharpening stone comes with different grits on each side. The uneven side is used to grind the knife steel, and the smooth side is used to sharpen the knife.

So, you need to start from the rough side. Simply hold the knife, put it on the stone at the desired angle and start dragging the knife towards you. After that, pull up the knife, place it again and drag it toward you again. Do this a few times.

After that, flip the knife and do the same until you create a new edge on this side too.

Flip the Stone to Use Fine Grit:

Now you need to use the fine grit to make the edge smooth and sharpen the knife. Flip the stone to get a fine grip. Then place the knife on it and start sharpening like before. Once one side is done, flip the knife and sharpen the other side.

Don’t stop doing this until both sides become sharpen as you expected.

This is the process of using a knife sharpener stone to sharpen a knife. I hope that’ll make the sharpening process easy for you.

Safety

There are some things you have to be careful of at the time of using a sharpening stone. Have a look at those.

  1. Make sure that you have used the lubricant properly. If the lubricant is more or less than the necessary, you may face problems in performing the process.
  2. Keep your eyes on your fingers. Accidentally your finger may touch where the blade touches the stone. If this happens, your finger will cut off.

Using any tools need concentration. So, concentrate fully on it when you are using a sharpening stone.
