You can also use something to help you to maintain the angle at the time of sharpening. But it is not necessary if you are a regular in doing this.
How to Use a Knife Sharpening Stone
Using a knife sharpening stone to sharpen a knife needs proper care, concentration, and some knowledge. Now, I’m going to describe the process of sharpening a knife using a knife sharpening stone. Please read it carefully. Otherwise, you may miss some critical points. Let’s start.
Know the Angle:
The knife you buy is sharpened at a specific angle. You can sharpen at the same angle or change the angle if you want. Changing the angle needs some more time than keeping the angle.
If you want to keep the angle but don’t know at which angle your knife is sharpened, look at the packaging or search on the internet. You’ll find that easily.
If you want to change the angle, I suggest you keep the angle between 10° – 30°.
Lubricate the Sharpening Stone:
In the previous section, you have already seen that sharpening stones seed oil or water as a lubricant. So, you need to lubricate the stone with the help of proper lubricant. If the stone wants water, use water. Otherwise, use oil to lubricate the stone.
Some stones don’t need lubricants. In that case, you have to skip this step.
Start from the Rough Grit:
Generally, a knife sharpening stone comes with different grits on each side. The uneven side is used to grind the knife steel, and the smooth side is used to sharpen the knife.
So, you need to start from the rough side. Simply hold the knife, put it on the stone at the desired angle and start dragging the knife towards you. After that, pull up the knife, place it again and drag it toward you again. Do this a few times.
After that, flip the knife and do the same until you create a new edge on this side too.
Flip the Stone to Use Fine Grit:
Now you need to use the fine grit to make the edge smooth and sharpen the knife. Flip the stone to get a fine grip. Then place the knife on it and start sharpening like before. Once one side is done, flip the knife and sharpen the other side.
Don’t stop doing this until both sides become sharpen as you expected.
